Chapter 3 - Treason

Grovyle stopped in place as he entered a large clearing and frowned.

“You honestly think I don’t know you’re following me Lugia?” He asked rhetorically.

Though the question wasn't meant to be answered Lugia stepped from the shadows of the towering cliffs and spoke, “You honestly think I’d just let you do as you please?” he responded with the same question.

Grovyle only scoffed, Lugia was just trying to stall him but he wasn’t going to fall for it.

“There he is!”

The voice drew both their attentions as the two found themselves surrounded by Sableye.

“Ahahahahaha!” Lugia laughed cruely, “It seems the odds are no longer in your favor Grovyle!”

Grovle growled, the leaves on both his wrists forming into a twin Leaf Blade attack.

“Sableye, your arrival is well timed. Do me a favor and destroy Grovyle!”

The Sableye cackled as two of them charged Grovyle who skillfully dodged and struck back, unfortunately not seeing a third Sableye come at him from the left, its claw striking his wound from before.

As Grovyle collapsed Lugia grinned, “Well done, now finish him before he…AUGH!”

Grovyle’s eyes grew wide in disbelief; one of the Sableye had just struck the Pokemon it served under.

“Wh-what is the meaning of this?!” Lugia snapped, “You’re supposed to attack…Gah!”

“Don’t you get it Lugia?!” Grovyle said in annoyance, “You aren't their only master.”

Lugia looked at the grass type, “What are you imply…Ack!”

In his attempt to dodge a third Sableye Lugai found himself back-to-back with the one Pokemon he’d ordered killed.

“Stop asking questions and just fight!” Grovyle snapped, “I don’t get why they are attacking you either but if you want to live then fight back!”

The Sableye lunged at them not long after those words were spoken.

----

Grovyle and Lugia fought in perfect sync, when one dodged the other countered, just like in their history with each other the duo fought as one; sadly their unity didn't last very long.

Grovyle and Lugia had bested the Sableye who quickly turned tail and fled, leaving the two alone.

“Not bad, and here I had thought you’d stab me in the back agai…Hrk!”

Grovyle hadn’t realized that Lugia had come up behind him and was now pinned to the cliff by the Diving Pokemon’s tail.

“First you say I’m not the only master the Sableye serve but then you say you don’t know why they attacked me…you know more than you’re letting on so tell me what you meant when you said I’m not their only master!” Lugia roared, pressing his tail blade harder against Grovyle’s neck.

“Hmph, why do you seem so surprised?” Grovyle replied in a casual tone, “Honestly Lugia, I thought you were smarter than that…Gah!”

“Don’t try my dwindling patience Grovyle,” The legendary growled as he yet again pressed the blade on his tail down harder on the gecko pokemon’s neck, “Tell me what you meant!”

Grovyle had come up with a theory as to why the Sableye had betrayed Lugia but why should he start caring about the pokemon who had betrayed him?

“Th-They already abandoned you in the Hidden Land didn't they? When I said that you aren't their only master I was referring to Dialga, they follow his orders too do they not?”

“Yes, they follow any orders given by me or Master Dialga himself.”

Grovyle rolled his eyes, “And you still question why your oh-so-loyal underlings would turn on you?” he asked rhetorically, “Don’t you think, oh I don’t know, that Dialga GAVE them that order?!”

Lugia froze, eyes growing wide, “Wh-what?”

“You failed to stop me and Sarah from leaving here the first time, let us escape the stockade and then once again fail to stop us from fleeing here a second time, and then once more failing to put an end to us in the Hidden Land. The answer is as clear as day Lugia.”

Lugia’s tail loosened from Grovyle’s neck as the legendary slumped in defeat, “No…you can’t be saying…”

“You've failed countless times Lugia; it’s to be expected that Dialga took those failures into account and abandoned you.”

“No…no that can't be…” Lugia kept muttering under his breath, Grovyle felt no sympathy for him.

“What goes on between you and whomever you work for is none of my concern. Actually, your little spats are convenient, do continue.”

Lugia could sense the humor in Grovyle’s voice and went silent, hearing nothing until Grovyle started walking away.

“Grovyle, wait!”

The sudden call startled him for a moment but he replied. “What?”

Lugia’s muscles grew tense, as if he was forcing himself to say something that went against everything he knew.

“How about we call a truce?”

Grovyle recoiled, surprised by the Psychic/Flying type’s words, “You’re pulling my leg right?” he asked.

“I’m serious Grovyle, we call a truce and I accompany you for awhile, after all, there’s strength in numbers.”

Those last four words caused Grovyle to grow tense, the last time he’d heard Lugia say those words was…

“I understand why you are so reluctant, given our past, you’re probably expecting that I made this offer just so I can strike  you when you’re down aren't you?”

“Hmph.” Was all Grovyle gave in response, that was exactly what he’d been thinking.

“You’re very cautious, Grovyle, but I know you are also very smart; as you can see I am in no condition to fight. That being said I will do nothing malicious as we travel.”

Grovyle raised a brow, “What's in it for you?”

“I want to…no; I need to know why the Sableye tried to kill me, if Dialga really wants me dead.”

Grovyle wasn’t convinced but he was tired of just standing around, I’m probably going to regret this later... Grovyle closed his eyes and gave a quick nod, “Fine, truce.”

As he head Lugia near he opened his eyes again, “However,” he began, voice taking on a surprisingly dark tone and his yellow eyes gaining a murderous glare, “betray me again…and you won't have to worry about disappearing from history!”

“Ha! As if you could ever kill me, you’re too soft Grovyle.”

“Don't tempt me. Now, let’s go.”

The unlikely duo continued through the wasteland at a distance from each other as they made their way, hopefully, towards the same goal.
